The Fragment Table has Reached its Maximum Threshold 16

The Fragment Table has Reached its Maximum Threshold 16, if you are getting this error on your cisco router, please follow the under given instructions.

%IP_VFR-4-FRAG_TABLE_OVERFLOW: FastEthernet0/0: the fragment table has reached its maximum threshold 16, if you are getting the above given error on your Cisco router please extend the threshold to some higher number because number of fragments a table can handle has reached its limit due to traffic load. I was also having this issue on my Cisco 2811 router with two WAN ports and a single LAN port so I just increased the threshold so that the users can easily reach the internet. The command to increase the threshold is given as under:

ip virtual-reassembly max-reassemblies 1000 (“Maximum number which can be set is 1024”)

How and where to run this command is given as under:

  • Open router configuration using putty
  • Go to configuration terminal
  • Go to the said interface so that you can issue the above given command to increase the threshold.
  • Enter the command and press enter.

Check if you got everything under control and save the running configuration.

Note: before you implement the above given command please take a backup of the running configuration using any backup tool like TFTP.

You can check the fragment by using the show ip traffic command
