Install Windows XP, Vista and 7 from a USB

As you guys know that installing windows Vista and windows 7 from a USB is not a magic but making this process more simplified and adding some more windows family members to install from a USB stick is something worth reading.

WinToFlash

WinToFlash not only creates a USB boot for Vista and 7 but it also creates the installer for windows XP, 2003 and windows 2008 server too with few very easy steps.

wintoflash2

wintoflash3

The default options make it easy to roll a silent Windows install, or you can flip the custom switch and specify the exact setup parameters you want to use.

Another very good use of this application is to make all the troubleshooting application bootable from the USB so that not to burn the CD’s all the time to troubleshoot the PC. WinToFlash is a free download and is totally portable. It’s an excellent tool to add to your USB-related utilities. To download this marvelous application please use the link under given;

  1. Trying to get Win XP Pro onto bootable USB
I am unable to get this working. OK I did get it ONCE but can’t seem to reproduce it no matter what I try. I think I am using the same steps as before but would appreciate someone looking over my shoulder.
I got the following procedure watching a youtube video and seems to have worked at least ONCE:
    Open Win2Flash
    Select Advanced
Select Create Bootable MS-DOS USB drive
    Format 32LBA
    Return to Wizard
Make sure correct drive letters for Windows XP and USB
    Run
    and then
Bios set to boot from USB
Now as I said, I was able to create a working USB stick ONCE and it still works (so yes the computer is set to boot correctly). It’s just that it is on a 8gig stick and I have a couple of 1gig sticks I’d rather use for this purpose.
Is there a size threshold since XP is only about 700MB? I’ve tried 2 and 4Gig drives with same failure.
I have tried numerous XP Pro with sp3 slipstreamed, with sp2 and even an original xp home disc. I just end up with a blinking cursor although the correct files seem present on the stick.
I have tried the simple setting Transfer Windows XP/2003 setup to disc but that didn’t work either for me.
I am on Dell laptops if that matters??

  2. I am using WinToFlash version 0.7.0026 beta from 11/07/2011.
    Is this beta version buggy??
Is there a rock stable version with a proven track record?

  3. UPDATE:
    Got it to work!
    Select Advanced
    SelectTransfer Win XP/2003 to USB
Critical Step: Changed Format to 16LBA
I just got a very quick and functioning USB using Transfer Win Files Setup option.
Running an installation right now and unless I post back, assume all is well.
